Location: East Orange, NJ 

Job Type/Status: Part Time (Expected to work days, some evenings and possibly weekends to meet the needs of families in the vicinity.)

Salary: $20 per hour

Position Summary:

The Kitchen Helper / Driver supports the Nourished Neighbors Food Program by assisting with food preparation, packaging, kitchen sanitation, and safe transportation of meals and food supplies to community distribution sites. This role plays a vital part in ensuring that individuals and families experiencing food insecurity receive nutritious, high-quality meals in a timely and respectful manner.

Duties and Responsibilities

Kitchen & Food Preparation Support

  • Assist with meal preparation, food packaging, and portioning according to program guidelines.
  • Support inventory management, including receiving, storing, and rotating food supplies.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen areas, equipment, and storage spaces.
  • Follow all food safety, hygiene, and health regulations.
  • Assist with special food preparation projects and community events as needed.

Transportation & Delivery

  • Safely transport meals, groceries, and supplies to distribution sites, partner agencies, and community locations.
  • Load, unload, and organize food items for delivery.
  • Conduct basic vehicle inspections and report maintenance needs.
  • Maintain accurate delivery logs and documentation.
  • Ensure timely and professional service to community members and partners.

Program Support & Customer Service

  • Provide courteous, respectful, and trauma-informed service to clients and community partners.
  • Assist with on-site food distributions and pantry operations.
  • Support volunteer coordination and set-up/clean-up activities.
  • Communicate operational issues to supervisors in a timely manner.

Safety, Compliance & Operations

  • Adhere to agency policies, safety standards, and risk management procedures.
  • Follow proper handling procedures for perishable and non-perishable foods.
  • Support compliance with funder, licensing, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in required trainings and staff meetings.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Previous experience in food service, kitchen support, delivery, or warehouse operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic food safety practices (ServSafe certification a plus).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends as needed.
  • Ability to safely operate a forklift, pallet jack, hand truck, or other material-handling equipment to lift, move, and transport food and supplies (training/certification preferred).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for up to 2 hours.
  • Ability to bend, lift, walk, and carry up to approximately 50 pounds as required for program operations and food distribution activities.
