Salary: $24 per hour

Position Summary

The Specialist - Harm Reduction provides peer-based, harm reduction-focused support to individuals with substance use disorders. Utilizing lived experience and recovery principles, this role is responsible for engaging individuals, building trust, and delivering practical harm reduction education to reduce overdose risk and improve health outcomes. The Specialist focuses on client engagement and retention by meeting individuals where they are in their recovery journey. This role supports, but does not lead, case management functions and works collaboratively with Navigators to ensure clients remain connected to services and supports.

Responsibilities:

• Provide harm reduction-focused peer support to individuals with substance use disorders in an in-office setting
• Utilize lived experience to build trust, model recovery, and promote hope and engagement
• Deliver overdose prevention education, including recognition, response, and naloxone administration
• Distribute harm reduction materials and supplies in accordance with program policies and guidelines
• Educate clients on safer use practices, risk reduction strategies, and available recovery pathways
• Support clients through referral and linkage to substance use treatment, including detox, inpatient, outpatient, and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs
• Connect clients to community resources including housing, healthcare, food assistance, and social services
• Build and maintain supportive relationships with clients through consistent engagement and follow-up
• Assist clients in identifying triggers, developing coping strategies, and strengthening recovery capital
• Support clients in navigating systems of care, including healthcare, behavioral health, and social service systems
• Collaborate with Navigators, management staff, and community partners to ensure continuity of care and coordinated service delivery
• Document all client interactions, services, and outcomes accurately and within required timeframes in designated systems
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive client information
• Advocate for client needs and empower individuals to make self-directed decisions regarding their recovery
• Participating in individual and group supervision, case reviews, and required trainings
• Ensure compliance with all program policies, funding requirements, and documentation standards.
• Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required 
• Active New Jersey Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) certification required 
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience applying recovery principles and supporting individuals with substance use disorders 
• Demonstrated understanding of harm reduction principles, including overdose prevention and risk-reduction strategies 
• Experience working with diverse, high-risk, or vulnerable populations preferred 
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and maintain professional boundaries 
• Basic computer literacy and ability to document in Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems

Driver's License Requirement: This position is designated as a non-driving role. A valid driver's license is not required, as the essential functions of this position do not include transporting members or operating a motor vehicle on behalf of the program.
