POSITION SUMMARY:

The Medical Assistant (MA) provides direct and indirect patient care in the mental health outpatient setting. Maintains standards of practice. Participates as an interdisciplinary team member responsible for overall coordination of care and services delivered to clients. Works collaboratively with members of the health care team to provide patient/family education. Demonstrates knowledge commensurate with scope of practice.  Provide patient care services for patients under the direction of the qualified medical staff-reporting to a Nurse Practitioner as the MA's direct supervisor.


Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Serve clients across the lifespan.

  • Serve clients with both mental health and substance use disorder diagnosis, including co-occurring diagnoses. 

  • Review and verify medical and psychiatric medications with clients.

  • Completes and records vital signs including, but not limited to height, weight and blood pressur.

  • Administers injections as ordered under the supervision of qualified medical staff.

  • Maintains inventory of medications, syringes, and supplies.

  • Helps clients improve their coping abilities and knowledge of treatment, medication, and healthy lifestyle.

  • Works with clients' families to help improve the patient's abilities and help them deal with family member's mental illness

  • Provide each client care in a safe, comfortable, and private environment.

  • Communicate in an attentive and individualized manner in every encounter.

  • Provide preventive care information that matches patient age, sex and health status.

  • Assists medical staff with completion of required medical forms, monitoring of laboratory requirements and results.

  • Document care provided or procedures performed accurately on patient records in a timely manner.

  • Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting

  • Call clients and remind them of their psychiatric appointments to decrease the "no show" rate and client cancellations.

  • Communicates with non-medical staff such as social workers, professional counselors, billing and clerical staff to provide excellent patient care.

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

  • Certification from a Medical Assistant Program preferred

  • 1 year experience in a community health care setting 

  • Current unencumbered valid Driver's License
